Everyone knows the shiver a song can send down the spine at exactly the right moment. In 2011 a team at McGill University showed that the shiver is not a metaphor. It is dopamine.

Valorie Salimpoor and colleagues, publishing in Nature Neuroscience, scanned people's brains while they listened to music that reliably gave them chills. Using two imaging methods together, they caught the brain releasing dopamine in the striatum — the same reward chemical and the same circuitry that fires for food, and for other primary pleasures.

The sharper finding was about timing. The brain released dopamine in one region during the build-up, the anticipation before the big moment, and in a different region at the peak itself. Wanting and getting run on separate wiring. Music plays both.

This matters beyond neuroscience trivia. It means engaging with art is not decorative for the brain; it recruits the machinery evolution built for survival rewards. When people say a concert fed them, they are being more literal than they know.

The caveat: this was a small study of intense musical pleasure, the chills specifically, not every casual listen. Not everyone gets chills, and the work does not claim music is medicine on demand.

For anyone programming culture, it is a reminder of what you are actually offering. Not background. A real reward, wired as deep as any.
