One of the most useful studies for anyone running creative programming is small, simple, and about spit.

In 2016, Girija Kaimal and colleagues at Drexel University measured salivary cortisol — a standard stress hormone marker — in 39 healthy adults before and after 45 minutes of open art making. Participants were handed markers, clay, and collage materials, given no instructions, and left to make whatever they wanted. The result: a statistically significant drop in cortisol after the session, published in the journal Art Therapy.

The finding that matters most for program design is who benefited. The cortisol reduction did not depend on artistic skill or prior experience. People who described themselves as 'not creative' showed the effect alongside trained artists. In the participants' own written responses, the session was repeatedly described as relaxing, absorbing, and a release from constraint.

This is why serious art-therapy programming says 'no experience necessary' and means it. The benefit is not in the finished object; it is in the 45 minutes of absorbed making. A program that quietly filters for talent — through a portfolio, a skill level, an intimidating room — screens out the people the research says have the most to gain.

A few caveats worth keeping honest. The sample was small and short-term, without a control group in the strict sense, so it measures an acute effect rather than a lasting cure. It is one study in a growing but still young field. It should be cited as evidence, not proof.

Still, it points programming in a clear direction: unstructured over prescriptive, process over product, open materials over a single 'right' project.
